Get Hooked on Fishing
Year after year, hundreds of people come out to support the annual Bass Fishing Derby at Island Lake Conservation Area. And for good reason, it’s a really good time!
This year’s 13th annual derby, hosted by the Friends of Island Lake, will take place on July 15 and 16, rain or shine.
Species to Catch
Island Lake is rich with a variety of fish species, including:
- Largemouth bass
- Northern pike
- Black crappie
- Pumpkinseed
- Yellow perch
An exciting element of fishing is you never know what you may catch. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you might reel in the big catch prize. This year, we’re excited to announce a new top price for the biggest bass – $5,000! Additional prizes range from $125 up to $1,500. Read our derby rules and regulations for a full description of prizing and how to enter.

Reminders
- Minnows must be purchased at the park. Outside minnows cannot be brought in.
- Every participant needs to have a live well to hold fish, such as a cooler with lake water in it.
- Register ahead of time to save on admission fees, as the price increases on the day of the derby.
- All money raised goes to Friends of Island Lake for Island Lake trail projects.
- Watercraft rentals are available.
- Review sustainable fishing practices at CVC Parks.
Whether you’re a seasoned fisher or a first-time goer, fishing is for everyone. You could also make this a family adventure because we offer youth categories too! Our park staff are full of helpful tips and tricks to get you started and help you with any needs during your visit.
