Mulch is an Essential Tool for Your Garden
Applying mulch is one of the best things you can do for your garden, especially during hot, dry summers such as this one.
Mulch is any organic material, such as shredded bark, woodchips or leaves that is placed on top of the soil around the base of your plants. A 5 to 8cm (2 to 3 in) thick layer of mulch will protect soil from the drying effects of the sun, keeping it cool and moist. Mulch will also prevent grass and weeds from growing and, as it decomposes, add nutrients and organic matter to your soil.
Apply a natural, un-dyed mulch making sure to keep it 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) away from plant stems or trunks. Replace, as needed to maintain the recommended depth.
In areas of the garden where there are no plants and weeds aren’t an issue, consider leaving some soil mulch-free for ground-nesting and mud-loving pollinators.
