Lance-leaved Coreopsis

Two flowers

Coreopsis lanceolata

As many other summer bloomers are still developing their buds, Lance-leaved Coreopsis welcomes summer with bursts of warm yellow colour. Suitable for sand, loam or clay soils, these drought tolerant, clump-forming plants grow 30 to 60 cm (1 to 2 ft) tall and feature long-lasting blooms that do best in full sun.

Also an excellent pollinator plant, Lance-leaved Coreopsis provides nectar for butterflies, bees and moths. Plant Lance-leaved Coreopsis in small clusters or larger swaths in front of tall grasses or wildflowers, or in a mixed border with plants such as Butterfly Milkweed and Little Bluestem. Once in full bloom, cut and bring a few flowers to enjoy indoors.

After flowers bloom, pinch off and remove the dead flower heads to keep more blooms appearing. Lance-leaved Coreopsis spreads easily. To keep plants healthy or re-size a cluster, divide or thin in the fall by separating and removing clumps and replanting. Be sure to water any transplants immediately after planting.
