Caring for New Trees, Shrubs and Wildflowers

Care Tips For Your Newest Garden Additions

New plants are developing roots and establishing themselves so they need extra care for at least the first year. Feel the soil 5 to 8 centimetres below the surface around your new plants – it should feel cool and slightly moist, but not wet. If it is dry, you may need to water.

If you have a garden hose, remove the spray nozzle and lay the end near the base of the plant. Turn your tap to a very slow trickle, moving the hose periodically for even coverage. If you have a drip or soaker hose (a hose with holes along it), lay it on the ground circling your plant or newly planted area and allow water to slowly soak the ground. You can also use a watering can. Soak the soil well and try to avoid getting the leaves wet.

Adding a 6 to 8 centimetre layer of mulch around your plants will also help to keep your soil moist and cool. Pull the mulch 6 to 8 centimetres away from any stems or trunks.
