Healthy soil means healthy farms. Prioritizing soil health reduces the risk of drought, flooding, erosion, and runoff, improves water quality and increases resiliency to climate change.
Join members of the agricultural community for a free information session exploring practical approaches to soil health management. Enjoy a catered buffet while hearing from agricultural experts about the importance of best management practices for soil health, soil health assessment plans, and results from CVC’s innovative new hotspot identification tool for soil erosion (HITs) on farms in the Credit River Watershed.
About the Presenters
Holly Shipclark, Senior Coordinator, Agricultural Extension, Credit Valley Conservation (CVC)
Holly will share an overview of our new Watershed Plan. She'll present insights into how we're partnering with private landowners to help implement the plan and protect watershed health for generations to come. Some of the innovative approaches that CVC is using to support landowners and advance watershed health across the Credit River Watershed, including new modelling tools and soil health extension, will also be highlighted.
Kristian Stephens, Coordinator, Agricultural Extension, Credit Valley Conservation
Kristian will present results from soil assessments conducted on farms across Halton Region. He'll share his analysis of Soil Health Assessment and Plan (SHAP) testing results and connecting soil health data to field practices. He'll also highlight key findings and share practical recommendations and resources to help farmers improve soil health.
Jake Munroe, Soil Management Specialist, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA)
Jake will share information about SHAP, a mobile and web-based tool created by OMAFA to help evaluate field practices, benchmark soil health and track improvements over time.
Ruth Knight, Organic Consultant, Ontario Certified Crop Advisor Association
Ruth will provide a practical introduction to soil health, helping farmers understand what their soil health results mean in the context of farm productivity. She will dig deeper into field observations and management practices that can influence soil health and share practical ways to apply the information on farm. Ruth will also encourage farmers to connect with one another and build a local network for sharing experiences, ideas and resources.
