Watershed Plan

Planning for the Future

We’re developing a new watershed plan. A watershed plan is a tool that helps us understand the past and plan for the future health of the watershed. It identifies current and future conditions in forests, wetlands, streams and groundwater, and proposes solutions to address any identified issues.

The first watershed plan was completed in 1956. This new plan will use the latest science and data, as well as partner, stakeholder and community input to establish long-term priorities for CVC and municipal partners. It will set the stage for our scope of work for years to come.

Watershed Plan Phases

The creation of new watershed plan is a multi-year process.

Phase 1: Characterization of the Credit River Watershed – Complete (2025)

The Characterization Report tells the story of the health of the Credit River Watershed and how it has evolved from the 1950s to today. In this report we use the latest watershed science to describe how natural hazards, water resource and natural heritage systems have evolved since CVC’s first Watershed Plan in 1956.

The Characterization Report includes 17 chapters, that are grouped into six sections, containing a series of maps and tables to illustrate the key results. The report will be made available soon.

Phase 2: Future Scenario Modelling and Impact Assessment (2023 to 2026) – Evolution of the Watershed

The second phase of the plan will look towards the future to 2051. We’ll project how the health of the Credit River Watershed may be affected by changing climate conditions, land use change and the actions we can take.

To do this, we will consult municipal plans and strategies to develop informative land use and climate scenarios. For these scenarios we will be using scientific modelling software to understand future conditions related to access to greenspace, the abundance and distribution of wildlife, stream temperature variations, and flood risk and erosion potential across the watershed. This will be summarized in an Impact Assessment Report and will guide decisions on our preferred management scenario as we look to the future.

Phase 3: The Credit River Watershed Plan (2025 to 2027) – Making a Blueprint

In the final phase, we’ll develop a blueprint that will outline actions that CVC and partners can take to help protect, restore and enhance the local environment to support the long-term health of the Credit River Watershed. This will be documented the Credit River Watershed Plan, that includes an Implementation and Monitoring Plan.

Get Involved

The community’s voice is an important part of the Watershed Plan development process. Stakeholders are being engaged at key project milestones to collect feedback to inform the Watershed Plan.

The input we receive will be reflected in key decisions and help shape a plan that is inclusive, transparent and locally relevant.

Engagement Opportunities

We do not have any current opportunites. Sign up for the Watershed Plan newsletter for periodic project updates and notices for upcoming opportunities to get involved.
