Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), in partnership with Farm & Food Care Ontario, invites farmers and rural landowners to the Cultivating Collaboration on Rented Farmland workshop. The workshop is taking place on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Caledon Village Place, 18313 Hurontario Street, Caledon Village.
“Renting farmland can be tough. Without permanent tenure, farmers often lack control over the land, making it difficult for them to make investments toward long-term environmental and economic sustainability,” said Kate Hayes, Senior Manager, Ecosystem Restoration and Management at CVC. “This event aims to support both farmers who rent farmland and their landowners. By working together, we can have sustainable win-wins for farmland.”
In the Credit River Watershed, 53 per cent of farmland is rented. There are several challenges that farmers and landowners experience. Workshop participants will learn about:
- Written leases, effective communication and sustainable farming practices
- Tools and strategies that both landowners and farmers can use to build effective, long-term and trusting relationships
- Long-term management plans
- Practical ideas based on real farm experience
“Starting a conversation about land rental can be challenging for both farmers and landowners, but building a strong, mutually beneficial relationship makes all the difference,” said Bruce Kelly, Program Manager, Farm & Food Care Ontario, who will be presenting at the workshop. “Hearing stories from those who’ve tackled similar hurdles can offer practical insights on what works well. With clear communication and a shared vision, farmers and landowners can create agreements that help everyone feel secure and invested in the land’s future.”
This is a free event suitable for farmers and landowners in and around the Credit River Watershed. Registration is required by November 12 at cvc.ca/CultivatingCollaboration.
