The 3-30-300 Rule

Trees play a vital role in cooling cities, reducing carbon dioxide, supporting wildlife and enhancing air quality. They’re also extremely important to our mental health. Research shows that exposure to urban green space can increase our mood and life expectancy. But how much green space do we need?

Forestry professor Cecil Konijnendijk from the University of British Columbia says cities should follow the 3-30-300 rule. The rule states that every person should:

  • Be able to see 3 trees from their home
  • Have 30 per cent canopy cover in their neighborhood
  • Live 300 metres away from the nearest park or green space

Does your neighborhood meet these requirements? Help your neighbourhood meet or exceed these requirements by planting trees on your property. Learn more at Green Your Property.
