A Conservation Milestone
Over the past 20 years, the agricultural landscape in the Peel Region has been transformed by the efforts of dedicated farmers with support from the Peel Rural Water Quality Program (PRWQP). Together with the ALUS Peel Pilot, this initiative has funded over 236 improvements on farm properties, contributing almost $1.5 million to enhance our land and water.
These projects have led to significant environmental improvements on over 449 hectares, driving local change in farmland management practices toward a sustainable future.
Credit Valley Conservation, Peel Region, Toronto and Region Conservation, and ALUS are excited to host the 2024 Peel Farm Tour, October 2 to celebrate this 20-year milestone.
The farm tour will start at the beautiful Spirit Tree Estate Cidery in Caledon, followed by a scenic walk to Gary and Debbie Mountain’s farm. Both locations have completed agri-environmental projects with the support of the PRWQP and ALUS programs, and are now enjoying the benefits.
Before the walking tour, participants will enjoy a locally sourced, seasonal lunch and a keynote address by The Honourable Rob Black, Senator (Ontario) and Chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry. Senator Black will address the Senate’s recent report on soil health in Canada.
The Senate’s Report: Critical Ground
The Senate’s report, entitled Critical Ground, identifies Canada’s soil as a crucial yet undervalued natural resource and calls for immediate, collaborative action for its sustainable management and protection against threats like climate change, urbanization, and soil degradation to secure a healthy future for all.
