Trees Bring Communities Together
Fall is around the corner and the cooler weather signals an ideal time to plant trees. This spring we planted approximately 200 trees through our Home Tree Giveaway program on urban home properties. We are now halfway to our goal of planting 400 trees in low tree canopy neighbourhoods in Mississauga and we’re not done yet!
This year, we received funding from the federal government to become a local partner in its 2 Billion Trees program, which promises to plant two billion trees throughout the country by 2030. CVC’s 2023 Home Tree Giveaway is also funded in part by the City of Mississauga and includes delivery, planting and after-care instructions for homeowners. We’re focusing our efforts in neighbourhoods based on current CVC and municipal priorities to best address issues like climate change and flood resilience. Each tree planted in Mississauga will also count towards the city’s goal to plant one million trees by 2032.
Planting a tree in your yard has many benefits. It’s one of the best ways to:
- Cool your neighbourhood
- Mitigate the effects of climate change
- Create a peaceful oasis for birds, pollinators and you to enjoy, while making your neighbourhood healthier
How Does the Program Work?
Staff from our Home Planting Team will assist you by planting your free tree in the best spot so it will thrive. We will also teach you how to plant any additional trees.
Additional trees can be purchased at the time of your free tree order. Planting more than one tree can add layers or create a grouping. Please note, additional trees cannot be purchased at a later date or in a separate transaction from your free tree order. We encourage those considering to purchase additional trees, to do so at the time of ordering their free tree.
Which Neighbourhoods are Eligible for Free Trees?
If you’re a resident of Mississauga wards 4, 7, 9 and 10, take advantage of these programs for urban tree planting and request a free tree! Use our property look-up map to check if you live in an eligible neighbourhood.
If you don’t live in an eligible neighbourhood, check back in with us next year when we’ll be offering our tree giveaway to more neighbourhoods. If you’re interested in learning more about our top urban tree suggestions, or how to plant or take care of a tree, browse our short video series.
Attend an Upcoming Workshop
We’ll also be hosting a Caring for Your Yard webinar on September 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. From pruning to mulching, you’ll learn environmentally-friendly yard and garden care tips to help prepare for winter and keep your yard flourishing year-round. Register online.
