Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is encouraging homeowners to take advantage of its free Tree Giveaway program, open to all residents in Mississauga (while supplies last).
“Planting a tree in your yard is an easy way to add value and beauty to your home while benefiting the environment. Trees offer shelter and food for birds, pollinators and animals we love. They also provide privacy, cooling shade, help address the climate change emergency and even improve our health,” says Melanie Kramer, Senior Coordinator of Residential Outreach at CVC.
This spring CVC planted approximately 200 trees on urban home properties and over 100 more trees have already been ordered for this fall. The goal is to plant 400 trees in neighbourhoods with low tree cover in Mississauga. Residents can still book their planting service for the fall.
Staff from CVC’s Home Planting Team will deliver your free tree and assist with planting in the best spot so it will thrive. They’ll also teach you how to plant any additional trees and provide after-care instructions for homeowners. Additional trees can be purchased at the time of your free tree order.
This year, CVC received funding from the federal government to become a local partner in its 2 Billion Trees program, which promises to plant two billion trees throughout the country by 2030. CVC’s 2023 Home Tree Giveaway is also funded in part by the City of Mississauga.
“Healthy and thriving trees are vital to our communities. We’re focusing our efforts in neighbourhoods based on current CVC and City of Mississauga priorities to best address issues like climate change and flood resilience. Each tree planted in Mississauga counts towards the city’s goal to plant one million trees by 2032,” says Lisa Brusse, Manager of Landowner Engagement and Stewardship at CVC.
