From Cement to Coneflowers: CRH Canada Paves the Way for Corporate Environmental Responsibility
CRH Canada Group Inc. (CRH Canada) is one of the country’s leading suppliers of cement, aggregate and ready-mix concrete. With over 3,500 employees, they provide products and services to support the country’s largest infrastructure projects.
As part of a global producer of building materials, CRH Canada recognizes their business has implications for the environment and the communities where they operate. That’s why they strive to demonstrate leadership not only in their field, but also in corporate social and environmental sustainability.
Investing in nature
In 2015, CRH Canada enrolled in CVC’s Greening Corporate Grounds (GCG) to explore sustainability opportunities on their Mississauga waterfront property. Working with GCG, they secured federal funding through the Habitat Stewardship Program [EC1] to create 2.2 hectares (5.4 acres) of critical migratory bird habitat along the Lake Ontario shoreline.
Approximately 76 per cent of the land along the lakeshore is urbanized. Birds migrating from across Lake Ontario need places to rest and refuel. CRH Canada’s award-winning Flyway Habitat Stewardship Project provides food and shelter to these weary travelers and helps ensure their survival.
GCG planted native woodland, meadow, thicket and grassland species that will provide birds with a diversity of fruit, seeds and insects to eat, as well as natural cover for protection from predators and the elements.
Beyond business as usual
With help from the Ministry of Natural Resources, CRH Canada employees also monitor peregrine falcons that nest at their Mississauga property and Ogden Point Quarry. Peregrine falcons were added to Ontario’s list of Species at Risk as a” Special Concern” in 2011. CRH Canada’s monitoring efforts contribute to the falcon’s recovery strategy.
A little closer to ground, you’ll also see monarchs, swallowtails and skippers flitting among the coneflowers and milkweed in the large-scale pollinator gardens recently planted by CRH Canada with the help of GCG. These gardens provide food for local butterflies and nectar for hummingbirds and native bees. They also provide enjoyment for the employees who manage and monitor them.
“Working with the Greening Corporate Grounds team has been such a positive experience. The employees at CRH Canada’s Mississauga Cement Plant have learned a great deal about the state of avian and insect diversity in Ontario. Through our biodiversity initiatives in collaboration with Credit Valley Conservation, we have been able to be part of the solution and the movement towards a more sustainable future firsthand.” Breanna Campbell, Environmental Coordinator, CRH Canada Group Inc.
Taking the lead
CRH Canada has a strong history of corporate social and environmental responsibility in North America. It’s no wonder they were recognized for the second year in a row as one of the Greater Toronto Area’s Top 100 Employers. GCG is thrilled to have them as a committed member of the program.
