Managing for Biodiversity

Biodiversity is a key element of ecosystems.  It is the variability among living organisms from all sources, within species, between species and of ecosystems. Landowners can support species at risk, (animals or plants that are at risk of extinction), and manage for biodiversity by:

  • protecting/enhancing habitat;
  • learning about the ecosystems around them;
  • getting to the know the kinds of plants, animals on your property;
  • promoting the establishment of native trees and plants;
  • carefully removing non native species;
  • learning about species of concern in your region;
  • creating wildlife corridors;
  • conserving wetlands and protecting water resources;
  • avoiding the use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers;
  • creating more core woodland habitat and providing protective cover for wildlife.
