Outdoor Water Conservation
Landowners should be concerned about water efficiency in the landscape as there is a limited supply of fresh clean water. As water moves through the ground, it is filtered and purified before it is stored in aquifers. If water is drawn from these aquifers at a rate faster than it can be replenished by the water cycle, severe shortages can occur and cause damage to aquatic systems. Prolonged temperature changes, such as heat waves, make the problem worse by lowering the groundwater levels even further.
Landowners should consider landscaping and gardening strategies that enhance water use efficiency such as selecting native plants and shrubs which are well adapted to local climactic and soil conditions and require less watering, and installing permeable paving that allows infiltration.
