For Immediate Release

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 -Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) invites watershed landowners interested in removing invasive plants from their property to a free workshop on Saturday, May 14.

CVC will lead the workshop along with Urban Forest Associates from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Belfountain
Community Hall. Topics will include the top 10 invasive plants in the area and how to fight them. A light
lunch is included, followed by a walk to identify invasive plants in the area. Organizers hope to remove
some invasive species along the way to teach best practices. The workshop ends at approximately 1:30
p.m.

The Belfountain Community Organization (BCO) presents this event as a highlight to the United Nation’s
International Day for Biodiversity held annually on May 22. The International Day for Biodiversity is a
celebration of plant biodiversity and a time to highlight its importance locally and globally. Invasive plants
are most often non-native species that out-compete native species for resources and space. Compared to
other threats to biodiversity, invasive species rank second behind habitat loss.

Ann Seymour, a leader with the Belfountain Community Organization, has a passion for ridding the local
environment of invasive species and educating the community on the negative effects of these plants.
Her efforts secured funding from The Town of Caledon to put on the event. CVC has partnered with BCO,
Urban Forest Associates and The Town of Caledon Green Fund to co-host the event.

Participants are asked to dress for the weather, and wear long pants and safety boots if possible. Space
is limited. Please register online at www.creditvalleyca.ca/biodiversity before May 13.
