Island Lake Ice Fishing Derby Hooks in a Crowd

February 23, 2018 – Despite warmer temperatures and a rainy final day, the annual Ice Fishing Derby at Island Lake Conservation Area recorded another successful year. The event took place from February 10 to 19 and raised more than $7500 in support of projects at the conservation area. The derby was hosted in partnership with Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), Credit Valley Conservation Foundation and the Friends of Island Lake.

The annual event has been hosted for more than 20 years. This year CVC received 160 entries that included familiar faces and new participants.

Derby winners included:

Pike
Domink Sosin: first place (30.9 inches)
Douglas Sylvester: second place (27.3 inches)
Kyle Dart: third place (26.6 inches)

Crappie
Matteo Tersigni: first place (12.4 inches)

Perch
Shahzeb Warid: first place (13 inches)

Kids Category (Pike)
Brody Schauer: first place (24.3 inches)
Daniel Demisowicz: second place (23.2 inches)
Lilly Clark: third place (21.9 inches)

The title sponsor of this year’s derby was Brookfield Residential. Funds raised from the event will support the construction of a new fishing pier in the spring.

The Island Lake Conservation Area annual ice fishing derby was established to connect people to nature, showcase recreational opportunities and raise funds to support projects that protect, restore and enhance nature at the park.
