Believe it or not, there are ‘ghost’ wetlands in the Credit River Watershed. Join Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) to learn about these fascinating features at the ‘Ghost’ Wetlands Workshop on Saturday, June 2 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Terra Cotta Community Centre, Caledon.

A ‘ghost’ wetland is an area where a wetland once existed but has been lost. CVC’s wetland experts will show participants how to read the landscape to identify ghost wetlands and how to restore them.

”Attend the workshop to learn how local landowners are bringing these valuable habitats back to life,” said Mike Puddister, Deputy CAO and Director of Watershed Transformation at CVC.

Wetlands are an important part of a resilient environment. They’re one of the healthiest, most diverse ecosystems in the world and provide food and habitat for fish and wildlife. They have an important role in reducing the risk of floods. Like a sponge, they take in water when it rains and slowly release it during times of drought.

Since the 1950s, 48 per cent (or more than 13,000 acres) of wetlands in the Credit River Watershed have been lost or degraded due to urban development and agriculture.

Join us to learn more about lost wetlands and how you can restore these valuable ecosystems. Register by May 31 at 1-800-668-5557 or

Workshops are free thanks to funding from CVC’s regional and municipal partners.

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is a local conservation authority established by the Ontario government in 1954 to protect, restore and enhance the natural environment of the Credit River watershed. That watershed is the area of land where all rainfall, snowmelt and runoff drain into lands and waters flowing into the Credit River. CVC creates connections between people and nature, knowledge and action. It inspires a deep appreciation for the role of nature in keeping people connected, healthy and happy. CVC is a member of Conservation Ontario.
