Credit Valley Conservation is one of Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities dedicated to protecting, restoring and enhancing our local natural environment. We care for the Credit River, its streams and tributaries from the headwaters in Orangeville to the shores of Lake Ontario in Mississauga. Summary of Functions
CVC has a strong history of working with landowners and other partners to further the conservation and restoration of the Credit River Watershed. Through the support of our watershed municipalities and others we are able to offer a wide and growing range of stewardship services to our rural and urban communities. You can be part of this dynamic and committed team as part of our Ecosystem Restoration and Stewardship (ERS) Program.
Reporting to the Terrestrial Restoration Technician, these positions support CVC’s Invasive Species Strategy by assisting with the implementation of the Invasive Species Management Program. This includes invasive species mapping, monitoring, and removal work on public lands. Additional activities include supporting other restoration programs with tree/shrub planting, aquatic herbaceous planting, building and installation of habitat structures, and nursery operations. These positions are based out of the Warwick Conservation Centre in Caledon and will spend considerable time working in Mississauga.
- Post-secondary studies in botany, biology, ecology, environmental science, or natural resource management are preferred
- Knowledge of the issues and impacts of invasive species on natural systems within Ontario
- Outdoor work experience necessary. Ability to work under inclement conditions (i.e.: bugs and weather).
- Experience in the collection of field data
- Experience with navigation using orthophotos and/or GPS enabled tablet devices
- Good native and non-native plant species identification and knowledge
- Some non-native invasive forest insect pest and disease identification and knowledge
- Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and Access database entry
- Experience with the safe operation of farm and landscape equipment, or chainsaw an asset
- Pesticide Applicators License with Forestry or Landscape certification an asset
- Experience with tree/shrub planting as well as plant nursery related maintenance an asset
- Access to reliable transportation and a valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s License required. The successful applicant will be required to provide a MTO Driver’s Abstract.
Summary of Major Tasks
- Work as part of a team implementing invasive species control projects on public lands. Including the use of chemical, mechanical and biological control methods.
- Assist with implementation of early detection monitoring, including for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
- Assist with implementation of TreeAzin injections to ash trees
- Safe operation of mechanical equipment including: farm tractors, weed trimmer, ATV, water pumps, loading/unloading trailers, brush chipper, brush saw, and chainsaw (if licenced)
- Collect invasive plant management data to update CVC management plans
- Collect restoration performance monitoring data
- Use basic field techniques to assist with planting trees and herbaceous plants, and build and install habitat structures in support of other Ecological Restoration and Stewardship (ERS) division related projects
- Field identification of flora and fauna (native and invasive)
- Assist with organization and staging of volunteer workdays and events
- Assist with the organization of data collection records and entry of data into MS Access database
- Conducting work in a safe manner, ensuring that all CVC health and safety policies and procedures are adhered to at all times
- Work outdoors and away from amenities on a daily basis
- Some after hours or weekend work may be required
- Other duties and projects as appropriate to the position
