Credit Valley Conservation is one of Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities dedicated to protecting, restoring and enhancing our local natural environment. Summary of Functions
The primary functions of this position are to complete forest and grassland breeding bird surveys and assist with wetland anuran monitoring using acoustic recording units as part of the Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program (IWMP). The successful candidate will also assist with forest and wetland vegetation and tree health surveys, and other aquatic and terrestrial components of IWMP as required (e.g., water quality sampling, electrofishing).
- Must be currently enrolled in or have completed a college/university diploma or degree program specializing in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Must be willing to work under adverse environmental conditions and during early morning hours.
- Ability to confidently identify eastern forest and grassland birds by both sight and sound is preferred. This includes the ability to identify ~157 bird species known to breed in the Credit River watershed. Sound identification skills are especially important.
- Prior work experience conducting avian point count surveys and distance sampling is an asset. Experience with nest searching and observing avian breeding behaviour is an asset.
- Prior experience working with automated acoustic recording units and sound analysis software (e.g., Kaleidoscope) is an asset. Ontario frog and toad identification skills by sound are also an asset but not required (training will be provided).
- Experience with plant identification and vegetation surveys is an asset.
- Ability to collect, enter, and manage data carefully and accurately.
- Ability to use GPS equipment and basic navigation with a compass.
- Good communication, teamwork, and organization skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Software (e.g., Word, Excel, Access)
- Standard first aid and CPR is an asset.
- Must have a valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to provide an MTO Driver’s Abstract.
Summary of Major Tasks
Perform the following tasks under limited direction:
- Conduct avian point count surveys at forest and grassland monitoring sites within the Credit River Watershed.
- Carefully enter and QC bird and other faunal data using Microsoft Excel and Access.
- Assist with deployment and retrieval of acoustic recording units at wetland sites, as well as analysis of acoustic data using Kaleidoscope Pro software.
- Assist with vegetation monitoring surveys.
- Conduct information management tasks related to organization of digital and paper files.
- Provide field and data management assistance to the other components of the IWMP (aquatic and terrestrial), or other CVC projects as required.
New employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as defined by the Ministry of Health as a condition of employment and must have satisfied the full post vaccination period required to ensure vaccination efficacy. The requirement to be fully vaccinated is subject to the Ontario Human Rights Code. If you are not fully vaccinated, a documented medical reason provided by a physician or registered nurse and time period for the medical reason may be accepted.
