Project Update: Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area

//Project Update: Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area

Formerly known as Lakeview Waterfront Connection.

We’re making great progress towards creating our new 26-hectare conservation area on the Mississauga waterfront. Together with The Region of Peel and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority we’re building a beautiful and naturalized conservation area that will transform the Lakeview neighbourhood into a green oasis in the heart of the city.

July flyover:

Highlights:

Since the process started in the fall of 2016, we’ve created 10.5 hectares (26 acres) of new conservation land in an area of the waterfront that saw years of environmental destruction from near-shore stone mining and utility use. That puts us at roughly 40 per cent of the total land base for the new conservation area.

We planted a total of 20,135 aquatic plants in the new Serson Creek wetland. This is on top of the almost 1000 native trees and shrubs we planted last fall around the wetland.

We have responsibly reused more than 534,610 cubic metres of fill, 66 per cent of which comes from Region of Peel capital works projects. We treat this material as a valued resource to enhance the local environment and improve our waterfront. This saves Region of Peel residents on transportation and tipping fees related to other Regional works projects.  It also keeps thousands of trucks from driving long distances to northern municipalities that accept fill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

We’ve responsibly reused more than 152,736 cubic metres of clean rubble on the site to date.

We’re very close to being finished shaping the new river channel that will connect Serson Creek to Lake Ontario. Serson Creek is currently buried in a pipe underground. This move will allow fish to access the creek for the first time in decades.
