Building a corporate culture of sustainability through employee engagement
Located in the north end of Mississauga, Lynch Fluid Controls designs and manufactures hydraulic motion control manifolds and integrated hydraulic sub-systems for domestic and global distribution. While Lynch takes pride in having the largest dedicated manifold design team in North America, its equally proud of its commitment to employee well-being and the environment.
A corporate culture of sustainability
In 2014, Lynch established a Sustainability Committee to oversee initiatives at its facilities, including its Mississauga location. Six employee volunteers lead the committee. All staff are involved and understand the purpose behind it: to take care of the world we live in for ourselves and for future generations.
Lynch believes its a personal, professional and social responsibility to conserve and preserve the places we work and live.
“If someone feels they’re working for a company that takes corporate social responsibility seriously, there’s a certain amount of pride in ownership and in being part of a forward-thinking and environmentally conscious company you can’t put a dollar value on,” says Ernie Lynch, founder of Lynch Fluid Controls. “That attitude goes home, goes to kids and relatives and spouses. Everybody starts to think more about conservation and doing things in a green way.”
The key component is employee engagement
Determining the right sustainability projects requires research, of course, but also employee engagement. Everyone at Lynch is invited to participate. Successful participation depends on employee confidence in company values and having a strong leadership team that actively shows their commitment. Leaders who walk the talk, believe in the cause and take an active role in sustainability can motivate their employees to see ideas through to implementation.
Actions communicate commitment louder than words
Lynch’s employee incentives and on-site projects show they’re serious about employee well-being and sustainability. In the summer, employees can pick fresh organic vegetables from the hydroponic tower gardens outside. They’re encouraged to walk, bike or take public transit to work. If those options aren’t available, Lynch offers a purchase rebate on hybrid or electric vehicle. All lightbulbs have been switched to LEDs and the company plans to invest in solar in the future. But perhaps the most outstanding project is the green roof.
Taking sustainability to the roof
Lynch was the first manufacturing company in Mississauga to install a 30,000 square foot green roof. Green roofs are ideal for buildings with flat roofs. They help capture and divert water from storm sewers which helps prevent flooding on sites with large paved areas. Lynch’s green roof has a variety of flowering plants. The plants help improve air quality and can last longer than conventional roofing material. The green roof also helps reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, manage stormwater runoff and provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies and migrating birds.
Join Lynch in taking the lead on environmental sustainability
Having a green team is an effective way to launch environmental initiatives at work. Lynch recommends starting with a (virtual) employee roundtable to discuss sustainability actions employees are taking at home. Adopting those actions in the workplace can be the first step toward larger projects and creating a strong corporate culture of sustainability.
