Wondering what to do on Family Day? Spend some time outdoors enjoying Mother Nature. On Monday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) offers family activities at two of its parks – Terra Cotta Conservation Area and Island Lake Conservation Area.
The Watershed Learning Centre at Terra Cotta offers activities for parents and children between the ages of seven and 12. Participants can build a pine cone birdfeeder; craft a paper bird out of recycled paper to take home; enjoy bird watching with binoculars; and stop by at a scavenger hunt table to look for items outside.
Both the Watershed Learning Centre and Visitors Welcome Centre offer complimentary hot chocolate during the day. Families can also purchase a hot dog to roast at the fire pit outside of the Visitors Welcome Centre for $2 a hot dog. There will be skating and snowshoeing on the trails at Terra Cotta, weather permitting with snowshoes available to rent.
Since Feb. 18 to 20 is also Family Free Fishing Weekend in Ontario, Family Day is the perfect time to learn more about ice fishing. From now until Feb. 29, CVC is holding its annual Island Lake Ice Fishing Derby. The cost to register is $30 per person. Daily admission fees apply. Prizes will be awarded in several categories including: largest Northern Pike, largest Black Crappie and largest Yellow Perch, most fish caught and overall largest fish caught during the derby. On Family Day, CVC staff will also give fishing demonstrations with an underwater camera.
During the day, Island Lake will also hold a special Family Day Hockey Shootout. Tickets are $2 per shot or three shots for $5 with chances to win Toronto Maple Leaf apparel. Prizes are limited so participants should arrive early. Other activities include a curling competition. Cross country skiing and stating will be available, depending on weather conditions. Island Lake will also have a hot dog roast for $2 a hot dog.
