As children, many of us read the bestselling story by Shel Silverstein The Giving Tree. It focuses on the selflessness of Mother Nature, giving all that she has to satisfy human needs, which makes her happy.
The story has two important messages: the first is about the gift of selflessly giving and the second is a warning about taking until there is nothing left to enjoy. Perhaps the most important message is balance. Mother Nature provides us with all the tools we need for a healthy, happy life – shelter, food, water, clean air and beautiful landscapes, but she needs love and attention too!
What a great reminder as we approach the opening day of the giving season. This year we are set to celebrate #GivingTuesday, a national movement that celebrates giving back. It’s a time that charities, companies and individuals come together and support their favourite causes, whether it is through donations, volunteering, helping a neighbour or spreading the word at the local level.
This year the CVC Foundation is kicking off our Be a Conservation Hero campaign for #GivingTuesday. The campaign is in honour of the environmental commitment of our past Chair, Pat Mullin, who served on the CVC Board of Directors for 28 years. Funds will help engage, inspire and empower Mississauga youth through our Conservation Youth Corps program, which connects students with nature and encourages long-term environmental leadership.
Our goal is to raise $28,000 in 28 days. We challenge residents and businesses in Mississauga to show support for local youth and nature. Take a page from The Giving Tree this giving season and help give back to Mother Nature for all that she gives us.
